I've made previous post about the importance of teen fitness and how there aren't enough programs designed specifically for teens. In this post today I'm going to shed some light on some programs that are designed for teens...it just may not be so obvious as weightlifting.

Martial arts. Particulary combat sports such as boxing, wrestling, brazilian jiu jitsu, and mma.

The reason I don't list any traditional martial arts like karate, kung fu, and taekwondo is because...let's be honest guys, the combat athletes are in much better condition and in much better shape. This is because they train with a purpose, to become in fighting shape, because if they don't they are at risk of losing. When it comes to traditional martial arts, not much is at stake really. This is why you see alot of overweight karate instructors who always seem like they have gassed out if they show you two techniques.

Now, I understand that not everyone wants to fight. As a matter of fact, the biggest reason I stopped training muay thai and american boxing is because I was getting headaches...lots of them. Even during a sparring match I got hit with a solid uppercut (props to the guy who did it though) that made me feel dizzy for two weeks. The sad thing is that we weren't even going hard. So this was a sign to me that obviously it's not healthy so I stopped.

However, if you do feel the same way about me when it comes to head trauma, I reccomend a grappling art such as brazilian jiu jitsu. This martial art in my opinion is the greatest because you not only get an amazing full body workout in but you also learn one of the most practical forms of self defense. Sure, you're not going to pull guard on a street fight, but alot of the concepts for control and submission can be used from standing situations, but that's another post for another day.

So in conclusion, try taking a combat sport. You will get a great workout in

Best,
Taylor Kelley
