What is the Best Workout Music?

Hi there! My name is Taylor Kelley, and I'm a Personal Trainer and Fitness Coach, which means I help people lose the weight, get in shape, and promote a healthy lifestyle.

A video I posted Thursday was about the best workout music

If you are a visual learner, Click this link to the video!

But if you are more of a reader...then read on.

(and btw, I'm not one of those guys who scripts the youtube video verbatum, so you will see something slightly different in the video and something slightly different in the post below.)

So what music should you listen to when working out?

Just to give you a background, I am a musician myself; I've played violin, cello, guitar and even wrote and produced my own music. (Some of them are very....very old, so if you are interested in seeing them.... click here *cringe)

There was even a point in my life where I thought I wanted to be a songwriter, but I had more of a passion for fitness, but on to the matter at hand...

I like to divide my music into 3 Phases of the workout:

  1. Phase 1 Warm Up Music:
In this phase, listening to up-beat and fast paced music is a great way to get your mind in the game for working out. Just like how UFC fighter's use their walkout music before fights to pump them up, it is similar when you are going to workout (either in a gym, playground, your own room ect... I offer several programs that fit your workout needs and isn't limited to a gym, if that interests you, click here) You want to be excited when you go to the gym, so I'd recommend a new song you really wanted to listen to, or a new album of your favorite artist in this phase. (Just don't warm up tooo long!)
  2. Phase 2: Workout Phase
In this phase, you still need to be pumped up, but preferably things with a consistent rhythm, like hip hop or rap. If you could make the music match your reps, then that would be perfect! Consider a way for someone to count your reps (still count them in your head of course) with a musical backing. I found this to be helpful in getting in the “zone” of working out where the pain is merely just an illusion in your mind...more on that topic for another day.
  3. Phase 3: The Cool Down Phase
For this last phase, something light and calming is preferred, especially if you are stretching after your workout. I like to listen to an audio book during this phase, or even some binural beats. Generally speaking, you want to avoid any upbeat music because your workout has ended and you need to relax and listen to your body in response to stretching. There actually is a correlation to the music you listen to and your mood. If you listen to screamo during your stretching phase, then you will naturally tense up your muscles without realizing it or not.
